Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Growing up in Laredo, Texas, I remember my grandmother and mother always lending a helping hand to others in need, although we did not have much. At 13 years old, my oldest sister was diagnosed with Scleroderma and I watched her struggle through life with this disease. Heartbroken, I knew that I wanted to help everyone in similar situations. Ever since, I have worked as a nurse, most recently as a registered nurse in an emergency department (ED). Unfortunately, I noticed the high volume of patients in need of mental health services. But as an ED nurse, I am limited in helping them through their crisis. So, I returned to school to obtain my master’s degree to be a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

Mental health is inflicting our communities at an alarming rate. I am passionate about helping you or your family member through these challenging times.

Taking a holistic approach, I assess the impacts of physical activity, dietary choices, sleep hygiene, and mindfulness given their strong connection to overall health. Albeit a pill cannot fix everything, we can also explore medications as evidence-based research shows medications can sometimes rebalance chemicals in the body. In this framework, patients inflicted by mood disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, and substance use disorders can benefit from therapy and learn skills to start living optimally.

Together, we will create an individualized plan to reach your mental health goals. We all deserve a safe, non-judgmental, peaceful space when we become overwhelmed and I seek to provide a comforting space for you.

When I am not in the office, there is no place I’d rather be but spending time with my babies. I also enjoy playing/watching basketball and learning about things like the brain, history, and space.

With regards,
Naomi
